February 2025

Dear neighbour,

We wanted to bring a few important consultations to your attention:

1. Poets Road Conservation Area

Islington Council is proposing a new conservation area for the Poets Road area. This would include the streets west of Newington Green, which are among the last on the Islington side of our patch not currently protected. The details are here.

The Action Group support this proposal. The implementation of the Newington Green conservation area in 2014 has, in our view, been a positive thing for our area. We welcome the particular focus with this conservation area on retrofitting and other sustainability measures. If adopted, this designation could help reduce the significant tree loss we’ve seen in recent years. We urge you to respond to the consultation in the next 24 hours.

*Deadline: Tomorrow, 24/02*

2. Private Rented Sector Selective Licensing Scheme (Mildmay Ward)

Islington Council is consulting on a new licensing scheme for private rentals including all those in Mildmay Ward. You can access the consultation here. If you’re short on time and believe that landlord licensing should be expanded, ACORN (a community based union) has a simplified Google form you can fill out, and they’ll submit a response on your behalf. Access the ACORN form here.

*Deadline: 13/04*

3. School Closures across Hackney and Islington

As a group of charity trustees, we have decided not to take a position on individual school closures but we recognise this is a deeply significant issue for our community. Declining pupil numbers across central London mean some closures may be unavoidable but the closure of any school has a profound impact on families, staff, and the wider community.

Earlier this month Hackney Council progressed to the last stage of consultation for a number of closures and amalgamations. The details are here. St Mary’s CoE Primary School (N16) is proposed for closure.

*Deadline: 05/03*

Last week Islington Council decided to move forward with consulting on the closures of Highbury Quadrant Primary School (N5) and St Jude and St Paul’s CoE Primary School (N1), though live links for the next stage of the consultation are not yet available.

In solidarity,

PPS After removing the confirmation email step at our Christmas event, we noticed some bulk sign-ups to this newsletter. If you have a connection to Newington Green, we hope you’ll stay subscribed! We only email a handful of times a year about the charity’s work and local happenings.
