July 2026

Dear neighbours,

We hope you're staying cool in this heat. If your home is too hot a reminder that you can find a list of 'Cool Spaces' on the Islington Council website. You can also email us or call on 0333 050 8812 if you need help or advice.

Jazz and AGM thank yous

Jazz on the Green was a great success on 27th June, maybe the best one yet! It's always a labour of love, with a year of planning and countless volunteer hours.

2026 Jazz featured five new bands to our event, including Central Foundation School's Jazz Band, the Errol Linton Band, Auka + Friends (in their first live gig together), Suna Alan, and The Scorpios. We also saw the return of the wildly successful children's storytelling tent hosted by Dragonfly Tales (more info at the bottom of this email), more than twenty community vendors, and a raffle that raised money to help pay the performers.

The whole community was brought together on one afternoon by music, delicious food, and the desire to have a great time, all on our beloved Newington Green. This area is home to so many different communities, and while we cross paths every day, real connection is rare. That's why we work hard to bring a diverse programme of musicians and stalls, inviting new local businesses, so that we can all see ourselves reflected in the day.

All the trustees play their part on the day, but a special shout-out to Light Creative for producing a beautiful poster, to Ali, David and Richard, our super-volunteers, and to Jenny, MC and Andy, who pull the whole thing together. We're always looking for ways to improve, so please share your suggestions for next year by email at jazz@newingtongreen.org.

Thanks also to everyone who came to our AGM, and to The Mildmay Club for hosting us. Breakout group conversations ran for so long, with such engagement, that we didn't have enough time for feedback afterwards - we'll build in more time for that next year. You can find details of the new committee and their contact details on the ‘about’ page of our website.

The latest community Smash!

Newington Green is getting a table tennis table! After positive feedback at the AGM and some negotiations with Islington Council we’re almost there.

The table will be just north of the playground. We are asking local businesses to donate to towards the table but if you are especially keen, you can donate here and leave a comment to let us know what it’s for.

Environment sub-committee

Mark your diaries - we have helped to organise a community meeting with Mildmay ward local councillors for Thursday 17 September, 7.30pm at Mildmay Community Centre following discussions at our AGM related to traffic, buses and air quality around the Green.

More details to follow closer to the date- see you there! If you'd like to be in touch beforehand, you can reach us at environment@newingtongreen.org.

Bus news: route 10 is coming to Newington Green

TfL has confirmed changes to routes 19 and 38. The new route 10 will now be extended to Newington Green, rather than stopping at Mildmay Park as first proposed. (We'd supported Islington and Hackney Councils' suggestion for it to go to Dalston instead, hoping this might finally allow the bus stand on the Green to be removed- but Newington Green is still a better terminus than Mildmay Park.)

The new 10 will run to Battersea Bridge every 10 minutes on weekdays/Saturdays, and every 12 minutes on evenings and Sundays, from November 2026. The less welcome bit, in our opinion: route 38 will no longer reach Victoria, terminating instead at Holborn.

Full details and TfL's response to all consultation feedback are on TfL's consultation page.
