June 2024
Dear neighbour,
We hope you're very well. Apologies for the long gap since the last newsletter and the length of this one!
Jazz on the Green 2024
We are thrilled to announce that our yearly festival Jazz On The Green will be held on Saturday 13th July 12-6pm. More details on our instagram.
We have a couple of spaces for retail/charity stalls left. Please email jazz@newingtongreen.org for more details. (If you’re a local restaurant or bar you are likely to already have email in your inbox from jazz@newingtongreen.org).
Would you like to support us as volunteer?
We are looking for enthusiastic volunteers to join us. We need people for set up from 10am, coordinating activities throughout the day and cleaning up in the evening.
Please email us at jazz@newingtongreen.org by Friday 21st June and we will provide you with further details.
NGAG AGM invite
Please join us on Monday July 8th at 7.30pm The Mildmay Club for our AGM. We will have a copy of our accounts for you to view. Anyone interested in becoming a trustee please get in contact with the current Secretary at s.jones@newingtongreen.org for more details.
Mildmay Liveable Neighbourhood
We have not had a substantive update from Islington Council and don’t expect to until after the pre-election period ends. We will email you when we have heard. For new subscribers: the plans for the Liveable Neighbourhood can be found on Islington’s website.
Green Lanes petition
A resident has started a petition to call on Hackney Council to act to improve Green Lanes. The stretch of Green Lanes between Newington Green and Petherton Road is 40% Islignton and 60% Hackney and at various times over the last eight years we have had commitments from both local authorities that there would be investment to make it a safer and greener road.
As there is no sign of Islington’s next Liveable Neighbourhod (which we were told would cover roads west on Newington Green) we fully support Claire’s campaign to get Hackney to deliver what they promised back in 2020.
Please take a look, sign and leave a comment if you agree and share with local friends and neighbours.
Bookbanks
Two years ago one of our wonderful volunteers started a books and literacy stall at our food justice project- the Newington Green Food Hub. Bookbanks is now a fully fledged charity and last week it had its national launch. You can read more about it in this Guardian write up and you can donate to Bookbanks here.
Wellbeing Walks around Islington
The Garden Classroom are running ‘Wellbeing Walks’ with Bob Gilbert. The Newington Green walk on the 9th July may be of particular interest. More details on their instagram here.
Ferntower planters
After much negotiation we have agreed a watering arrangement for the planters at the bottom Ferntower Road with no.60 Brasserie. As the weather gets better we need more volunteers to help out. If you are able to water the planters for 30 minutes at 8am on any day of the week please reply to this email.
In solidarity,
Team NGAG
