Hello neighbour
Thank you for offering to volunteer - we have been blown away by the response in our community!
We’re reading every email that we receive but wanted to let you know that there might be a delay in getting back to you- we’re a small group of people organising this and we want to keep your data secure.
We are a grassroots charity with no paid staff so please bear with us.
Updates and ways you can get involved
Leafleting
Thank you so much to everyone who has already distributed leaflets in the neighbourhood. Thanks to this work, we have received an incredible amount of new volunteer offers. Through the flyers we’re also letting people know that their community is offering support in these difficult times. Many people in need of support have already reached out to us because they’ve seen one of our flyers. These are people who are not on facebook groups or whatsapp and they’re often the most vulnerable people in our community. They have told us that receiving the leaflet and hearing from their community in this way has meant so much to them.
At this point, we’re contacting specific people to distribute leaflets on streets that we know are not yet covered. You may receive a call or message from us if you have indicated you live in these areas.
Running errands
We’re getting some requests for support from people who can’t leave their home and who need support with shopping, running errands, etc. When we get those requests, we try to assign requests to two volunteers on an ongoing basis. This means that we might ask you to do the shopping, but also check in with the person regularly to see if they need any other support (for example if they need their shopping done again). We assign two volunteers so that one person doesn’t have to do everything on their own. If at any point, a person can’t continue to support, they can get in touch with us and we can arrange for someone else to continue the support. We also ask people to let us know how they are getting on. Please read the below volunteer guidelines before agreeing to run errands for someone.
Calls
Some people are getting in touch because they would like to have someone to talk to or check in on them on an ongoing basis. As with the running of errands, we’ll assign two volunteers to any such request. Some people might also get in touch because they need someone to do their shopping and to have regular calls, and we’ll always let you know if that’s the case. Please read the below volunteer guidelines before you agree to help us with calls.
Experience working with vulnerable people? Please let us know.
Some people who call us with requests for help are particularly vulnerable. We will be asking you this on ring round but if you have experience working with particularly vulnerable people and have an Enhanced DBS please email us. That way we can utilise your skills and experience in the most effective way.
Verification process
Safeguarding is our key priority so even though it’s administratively burdensome, we’re verifying every volunteer. That includes checking the electoral register and asking for a reference from an active NGAG member, or another voluntary organisation working in Islington. You’ll be getting a call from an NGAG exec member sometime this week. If you cannot provide such a reference there are still ways in which you can help, and we can speak about this when we get in touch.
Speak soon!
